Nigerian businesses are out here working hard, creating products, serving customers… and then completely fumbling their social media. It’s painful to watch.
If your social media isn’t bringing in customers, you’re probably making one (or all) of these mistakes:
Mistake 1: Posting Only When You Remember
You posted twice in February, disappeared for three weeks, then came back asking people to “patronise you for Easter.” That’s not a strategy, that’s chaos.
The Fix: Create a content calendar. Plan your posts at least a week in advance. Consistency beats perfection every single time.
Mistake 2: Only Posting Your Products
“Buy this.” “New stock available.” “DM for price.” If that’s all you post, you’re basically screaming at people to buy without giving them any reason to care about you.
The Fix: Follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of your content should educate, entertain, or inspire. Only 20% should be direct selling. Give people value first.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Your DMs and Comments
Someone asked a question in your comments three days ago, and you still haven’t replied? You just lost a sale. People don’t wait around; they’ll go to your competitor who actually responds.
The Fix: Set aside time twice a day to respond to messages and comments. If you’re too busy, hire someone to manage it or use our social media management services.
Mistake 4: Using the Same Content Everywhere
What works on Instagram doesn’t work on TikTok. What works on Facebook doesn’t work on Twitter. Stop copy-pasting the same post across all platforms.
The Fix: Tailor your content for each platform. Short videos for TikTok, carousel posts for Instagram, conversational posts for Twitter/X.
Mistake 5: No Call to Action
You posted something amazing and… nothing. Because you didn’t tell people what to do next. Should they visit your website? DM you? Call? Click a link?
The Fix: Every post should have a clear call to action. Tell people exactly what you want them to do.
Mistake 6: Buying Followers
Those 10,000 followers you bought won’t buy from you, won’t engage with your content, and make your page look suspicious. Real customers can tell.
The Fix: Focus on organic growth. Real followers who actually care about your business are worth more than 50,000 fake ones.
Mistake 7: Not Tracking Results
You’re posting every day, but you have no idea what’s working and what’s not. You’re flying blind.
The Fix: Check your insights weekly. What posts got the most engagement? What time do your followers come online? Use that data to improve.
